Pencil-beam scanning · painting the tumour spot by spot

beam's-eye view — magnets steer a pencil beam across a hexagonal spot grid, one energy layer at a time. proton = discrete spots (larger), carbon = continuous raster (sharper) + ripple filter. this is how a modern ion nozzle delivers.

a photon beam illuminates the whole field at once; an ion beam is scanned — each spot stops at its Bragg depth, so the dose is built up voxel by voxel with no exit dose.
